A Picture of the Year
Pictures of the Year International honors photojournalism and documentary photographers.
Every spring, the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism hosts the Pictures of the Year International (POYi) competition. This photo, taken by freelancer Aaron Huey, originally appeared in National Geographic as part of a package called “Broken Promises: The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.” The series was a finalist in the Community Awareness category of the 2013 POYi competition. In the photo, 9-year-old Wakinyan Two Bulls hangs prayer flags in a tree near Mato Tipila, or Devils Tower, a place of Oglala Lakota ceremony in Wyoming. More than a century after the tribe suffered the Wounded Knee massacre in 1890, the Oglala Lakota people are still practicing their tribal customs. The POYi contest has been honoring and promoting the work of photojournalism and documentary photographers since 1944.
